Other names: Apuleia Leiocarpa (scientific name), Amarealoa, Brazilian Ash, Grapia and Muiratua.
Distribution & Availability: Garapa has a golden to yellowish brown colour, which darkens with age. The grain is usually straight, but can also be interlocked. It has uniform medium texture with medium lustre.
Physical & Mechanical Properties: Garapa is a strong and durable hardwood.
Working Properties: Garapa is fairly easy to work, despite its density. Machines well to a fine finish. Takes nails and screws easily and glues well. There is medium shrinkage during drying. Contact with raw steel will react and cause black marks, therefore it is advisable to use galvanised screws.
Durability: Garapa is rated as durable , though vulnerable to termites and other insect attacks. It can be used for both interior and exterior applications.
